Provenance

Pre-historical NFTs/Ordinals

It’s our belief that the way today’s PFP NFTs & Ordinals are generated from multiple interchangeable assets for use as social PFPs [not games], actually started in 2003, with the launch of Weemees – a simple 2D avatar maker.

Genesis 2003 provenance. All WAGMIES Ordinals digitally embed the first ever 3D-rendered PFP, that artist DHW started working on in 2003. It took DHW until June 2005 to beta launch his ‘historically significant’ 3D PFP. DHW has been verified by Stripe, so you can be sure of his place in the provenance chain.

Although pre-blockchain, we can prove our provenance/heritage link to 2003/05.

Evidence

WAGMIES PFP heritage evidence comes in all shapes and sizes, from press and radio clips, to videos, to Wayback Machine Internet Archive, and other weblinks. Here’s a Wayback Machine link to our alpha test partner from December 2004 [click here – see bottom right].

It’s important to mention that our evidence is decaying over time, because that’s what happens to pre-blockchain digital media. However, here in 2025, enough evidence remains to prove our claims are factual.

The missing link to 10k PFPs

DHW’s Pre-NFT timeline. DHW’s timeline is work-in-progress. DHW fully acknowledges that new information may become available, which could alter the content. Always DYOR.

Version 1.1 of the timeline (see here) runs from 2001-2011. The timeline excludes games avatars, because the definition DHW found among HNFT communities like NFT Relics, separates game usage from social usage.

In early 2011, Eightbit, and Androidify (Larva Labs) were released, both using the same multiple interchangeable assets (red hat, blue hat, blue jeans, red dress, beard, etc) that when combined make a custom avatar …the same process used by WeeMees in 2003, DHW’s PFP/avatar generator, and all subsequent launches including CryptoPunks (Larva Labs) in 2017.
